5 Steps to become a Trucker
Step 1: You will need a Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
Your local college may have a truck driver taining program. You could qualify for a student loan or if
you are a veteran, the Government will pay the cost. College campuses are recruiting sites for companies
which are looking for recruits to join them. However, signing up for a company sponsored training will
entail a conditional working contract.
Step 2: Decide the type of Truck you would like to drive/operate
- Freight hauler
- Construction hauler
- Hazardous hauler
- Tank hauler
- Flat bed hauler
- Local hauler (City and State)
- Road driver (will be on the road for a week during each trip)
- Long haul driver (will be on the road for 3 weeks or more during each trip)
- Lowboy hauler
- Large doubles
- Small doubles
- Triples Small
- Straight Trucks
- Other Specialized hauling
Step 3: Get Familiar with the Equipment you choose from the above list
Step 4: Determination
It takes a great deal of will power to sustain the ambition of being a truck driver until it takes shape
into a full time profession.
Step 5: Personal Life
It is a known fact that truck drivers are on the road for most of the time. This may have
negative impacts on relationships at home. A good understanding of your partner will help.
